About
A research desk with a horizon, not a news cycle.
VC18z Research is the research arm of the Virtual Capital 18Z Foundation. The Foundation deploys patient capital into frontier technology; the desk exists so that capital is deployed against written, dated, falsifiable arguments rather than against sentiment.
Everything the desk concludes is published. That is a deliberate constraint: an argument you have to put your name to in public is a better argument than one that stays in an internal memo.
Principles
Six rules the desk publishes under.
Take a side
A note that surveys every view commits to none of them. Every stream states a position in the first paragraph and spends the rest of the page earning it.
Attach the bear case
The counter-argument is not a disclaimer at the end. It is re-run against every claim, and when it survives it goes in the note rather than being edited out.
Commit to signals first
Each stream fixes four observable signals before the conclusion is written. That is what makes a thesis falsifiable rather than decorative.
Revise in public
When a signal moves against us the note changes, with the date attached. We would rather be visibly wrong on the record than quietly right in retrospect.
Cite or say you cannot
The desk pulls timestamped sources before it answers and cites what it used. Where it cannot find support, it says so instead of inventing it.
Publish the whole thing
Standing notes, blog posts and the roadmap are free to read. The paid product is access to the desk, not access to the conclusion.
The foundation
Patient capital,
public research.
The Foundation has no quarterly reporting obligation, which is the only reason a desk like this can hold a position for four quarters while it waits for a signal to resolve.
